Clara felt a twitch behind her eye as she looked at the photos. Her grandmother, a woman whose tales always emphasized hard work and sacrifice, was pictured with a group of women, all dressed in flapper dresses, laughing and clinking glasses. The scene was from a high-stakes casino, the decor lavish. Clara had always known her grandmother as a humble, pious woman, never involved in any risky behavior. Her breath came in short gasps. She put the pictures back in the box as quickly as she could, her hands shaking. A tremor started at her fingertips and spread through her arms.
