Mark found himself staring out the window, at the distant city skyline, for what felt like hours. He barely registered the emails pinging in his inbox. His breath hitched in his chest every time the phone rang, imagining it was HR with *the* news.

He usually enjoyed the commute home, but today the thought of it made his head spin. He had a family to provide for, a mortgage, bills piling up. He felt a constant clenching in his jaw, a tension that radiated down his neck.

He considered calling his wife, but the words wouldn’t come. He didn't want to worry her. He simply wasn’t himself. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture more frantic than usual.
