He hadn't been able to concentrate all day. He had been doodling on his notepad, mindless shapes and figures, avoiding the work that needed to be done. A sudden flush of heat spread across his face every time someone mentioned "restructuring" in the elevator. The words felt like a direct threat.

He was suddenly obsessed with the weather, watching the rain beat against the windowpane. He felt a need to be away from the office, from the impending reality of change.

He kept adjusting his tie, pulling it tighter and tighter, as if trying to strangle the feelings rising in his chest. His hands trembled as he reached for his phone. He wanted to call his wife. He needed to tell her something. But he didn’t know how.
