She chewed on her lip, a nervous habit she'd long tried to break. The beach was supposed to be relaxing, the gentle waves a balm to her frayed nerves. But the accidental text – a confession to her best friend, intended for a secret lover – hung heavy in the air. The salty breeze did little to soothe the tightness in her chest. She kept glancing at her phone, her thumb hovering over the ‘read’ button, paralyzed by the fear of what she might find. The sun felt overly bright, the sand beneath her feet suddenly coarse and irritating.
