The ticking of the digital clock on the elevator panel became a metronome, marking the slow, agonizing passage of time. John could feel the muscles in his jaw clenching, and he found himself grinding his teeth. The silence was getting to him. He hated the silence.

He forced himself to take deep breaths, trying to regulate his racing heart. He glanced at Karen, who was humming quietly. He found the noise irritating. He wanted to shout. He wanted to scream.
