The afternoon sun streamed through the window, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air. John avoided meeting Mark's gaze as they walked back from lunch. He felt a strange tingling in his fingertips. The air felt heavy, as if charged with static electricity.

The conversation at lunch had been stilted, filled with awkward silences and forced smiles. He found himself picking at his sandwich, losing his appetite completely.

Back at their desks, the tension was tangible. Each keystroke, the hum of the computers, even the sound of their own breathing seemed loud. He stared out the window, but the view of the city did nothing to soothe the tightness in his chest.
