The sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but Claire found no comfort in it. She clutched the letter to her chest. Her father’s draft resignation from his prestigious law firm. He'd always presented a picture of success, of effortless competence. The letter told a different story.

It spoke of compromising his ethics, of being forced into decisions that went against his core beliefs. Her hands were clammy. She felt a growing tension in her shoulders. She wanted to scream, to ask someone, anyone, to explain it all.

She walked towards the kitchen window and stared out at the street. The world outside felt…wrong. Distorted.
