The air in the gallery was thick with hushed whispers and the scent of expensive perfume. Alex leaned against a wall, trying to appear nonchalant, but his heart was hammering against his ribs. His sister, Chloe, stood by the entrance, her expression carefully neutral. The curator began the reading. “The estate is divided equally, but…”

Alex’s mouth went dry. “The collection of modern art… is to be split. Miss Chloe will receive the physical pieces, and Mr. Alex… will receive the rights to them.” Chloe’s eyes flickered, barely noticeable. Alex could imagine the collection.

He thought of the money, of its value, how to sell them. He felt a sudden, unpleasant heat spread through his body. He forced himself to meet Chloe’s gaze, but it was like looking at a stranger.
