“How?” Mark whispered, staring blankly at the faded photograph of his father. The image, usually a source of warmth and nostalgia, now felt tainted. The news, delivered by his aunt over a crackly phone line, had left him reeling. A half-sister. Another daughter. He felt a cold wash over him, a detachment he couldn't explain. He'd always prided himself on knowing his father. The idea that his knowledge was incomplete, that his father had been leading a double life, left him feeling…lost. He ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture failing to provide any comfort.
