Michael reread the numbers on the screen. His pulse hammered against his ribs. It was his wife, Sarah’s, bank account. He’d stumbled upon it while trying to fix their shared laptop, a task he'd offered to do out of what he thought was love. A strange knot tightened in his stomach.

He hadn’t realized she had her own separate account, much less one boasting such a substantial sum. He wiped his brow with the back of his hand. He’d never thought of Sarah as secretive. Now, the way she sometimes kept her phone hidden, the hushed phone calls, seemed different, now laden with implications.

He closed the laptop, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. The air in the room felt thick. His usual routine of an evening drink and conversation was suddenly unappealing. He wasn't sure what to say, or even, frankly, what he was feeling.
