The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat like a forgotten secret. Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating dust motes dancing in a feverish ballet. She clutched the battered leather-bound journal, its pages brittle with age. Her fingers trembled as she flipped it open, the scent of lavender and something indefinably... *her mother*... filling her lungs. A list, scrawled in her mother’s familiar looping script, stared back at her: *See the Northern Lights. Learn to play the ukulele. Swim with dolphins.* Amelia felt a prickle of discomfort crawl up her spine.

She ran a hand through her hair, a nervous gesture she hadn't realized she’d inherited. A sudden gust of wind rattled the loose window, and she jumped, heart slamming against her ribs. The list felt like a challenge, a posthumous command. The thought of all these unfinished dreams weighed on her.

She had always kept her distance from her mother's dreams, but now she was forced to look them in the face. She sat down on an old trunk. It was a chore to breathe, as if the room itself was closing in.
