The old book sat on the desk. A thick, leather-bound tome with yellowed pages and faded gold lettering. The title, in elegant script, was “Secrets of the Earth.” A return address read “From Clara, with thanks.” Clara had been a student with a unique perspective. She was fascinated by everything, but she was also often lost in her own thoughts.

She flipped through the pages, her fingers tracing the words. A strange tension, like a tightened spring, coiled in her stomach. What did this mean? Why had she sent it?

She heard a floorboard creak upstairs, though she lived alone. Her gaze snapped up, her hand instinctively reaching for the phone.
