The afternoon sun blazed. I stood on the porch, watching Mr. Ito pace his lawn. He seemed agitated, waving his arms as he spoke. He pointed at the oak, the sun glinting off its leaves.

His words reached me, distorted by the distance. I felt a tightening in my gut, a nervous energy that made me want to pace along with him.

The tree felt like a sentinel, protecting me from the world.

He paused, then cupped his hands around his mouth, his voice carrying clearly this time. "It’s encroaching on my property!"
