The elevator ride to the top floor of the skyscraper felt like an eternity. The metallic tang of fear coated Leo’s tongue. His stomach was doing somersaults. He’d barely slept in weeks. He couldn’t seem to concentrate on anything.

When the doors opened, he saw her, standing alone near the windows. She was looking out at the city, but it was clear that she wasn’t *seeing* it. Her posture was stiff, rigid. The way she was staring out the window, like she was waiting for something terrible to happen.

He stepped over to her. “They said we’d get our results today,” he said.

She turned to him, her eyes dark. “I know.”
