The vibrant, mixed bouquet seemed to mock her from her kitchen table. Emily stared at the arrangement, a knot of unease twisting in her stomach. Roses, lilies, daisies, all vying for attention. And no card. She felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck.

She’d been so careful, so deliberate in her actions. She ran through the checklist in her head, item by item. Everything was perfect. She had no reason to feel this way. She kept glancing at the flowers. It was the lack of sender that was the problem, the open question.

She turned on the news, hoping to distract herself, but the images on the screen seemed to blur, the sounds muffled. She walked over to the vase and sniffed at the blooms, the sweet fragrance a contrast to the bitter taste in her mouth. She had to know who sent them. She began to search her phone.
