David felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead as he read the flyer. He ran his hand across his face, his skin prickling. The air in the apartment felt suddenly heavy, suffocating. He leaned against the counter, suddenly dizzy.

He saw the building, now a cold, shiny monolith, devoid of the warmth he had come to love. The image was accompanied by the sound of construction, the demolition of what he knew and the forced building of something unknown.

He spent the afternoon on the couch, staring blankly at the television. Each commercial, each news report, seemed to taunt him, to remind him of the impending changes. He felt trapped, his heart a frantic drum.
