The sterile white walls of the doctor's office seemed to amplify the silence. "Well, that's that," Janice muttered after her son left. Her voice sounded thin, almost lost in the room. The school called to say Mr. Harding, was now her son’s sixth grade teacher.

Janice felt a pressure in her chest, a feeling she hadn't experienced in years. Mr. Harding. She remembered his condescending tone, the way he'd dismissed her ideas. She had felt so small.

She gripped her handbag tightly, her knuckles white. The thought of Mr. Harding's influence on her son filled her with a nameless anxiety. She found it hard to breathe.
