Gemotions

The train rumbled along the tracks, the rhythmic clatter a backdrop to Eleanor's internal turmoil. She clutched the rejection letter, its edges softened from repeated touching. Her throat felt constricted, making it hard to swallow. She glanced at the other commuters, their faces impassive, oblivious to her inner storm.

She imagined throwing the letter out the window, letting the wind carry away her aspirations. The image brought a fleeting moment of satisfaction, quickly replaced by a deeper sense of emptiness. She focused on the scenery whizzing past, trying to distract herself, but the beauty of the landscape failed to penetrate her gloom.

The train screeched to a halt at her station. Stepping onto the platform, she felt leaden, each step an effort. The world was suddenly too bright, too loud.
