The elevator's sudden stillness sent a tremor of discomfort through Emily. She sighed. The feeling was familiar; the hollowness, the lack of excitement for anything. The elevator had just stopped, but for her, the world had also stalled.

Her coworker, Tom, was already on his phone, furiously texting. He was the definition of an extrovert, while she was a shadow. The thought of interacting with him, even in this constrained setting, filled her with a sense of dread.
