The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like an assault. Jessica stared at her reflection in the glass of her office. The person staring back was a stranger.

She’d spent years perfecting her skills, accumulating knowledge. Her colleague, David, however, had the connections.

She pushed away the coffee, the bitterness of the drink mirroring the taste in her mouth. She felt a familiar weight pressing on her chest, a feeling that had settled in during her lunch.

She decided to leave early. She could not work.
