The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya's throat. She coughed, swatting away a cobweb that brushed her cheek. The task, sorting through her late mother's belongings, felt like a chore she couldn’t escape. Days bled together in a haze of cardboard boxes and faded photographs.

She stumbled upon a manila envelope, tied with a brittle string. Inside, a crisp sheet of paper. It was a draft letter, her mother's handwriting elegant and flowing, dated from 1987. A resignation letter to a law firm.

"I am writing to express my profound disappointment..." The words on the page seemed to vibrate with a suppressed energy, a feeling Maya knew well. She slumped onto a dusty trunk, the letter clutched in her hand, the weight of a generation pressing down on her shoulders. Her own career felt like a dead end, a path she'd stumbled into and couldn't seem to navigate out of.
