He stared at the spreadsheet, the numbers swimming before his eyes. Another quarter, another failure. He slammed his fist on the desk, the cheap particleboard rattling in protest. He had to get out. He couldn’t stand it another minute.

He felt the need to visit his grandmother, to seek a familiar face. Searching through some old photo albums, he found a yellowed letter. A resignation, dated from 1975, from her secretarial job.

The words, though simple, resonated with a power that left him breathless. His grandmother had felt this too. He felt a tear trickle down his cheek. He had wanted to escape, but now he felt as though he couldn't.
