He hadn't left his apartment all week. The curtains were drawn, and the air was stale. Every moment felt a struggle, and every thought just a waste of time. Then, a deafening crack, followed by the sound of splintering wood.

The towering redwood, a majestic presence in the neighborhood, had been felled. The chaos of the scene seemed to echo the turmoil within him.

He stayed inside, staring at the ceiling. He felt no urge to help, no desire to move. He wished the world would just fade away.

The homeowner, Mrs. Chen, was visible from his window. She was pacing back and forth, muttering to herself.

He stayed where he was, feeling a weight inside that seemed to crush him.
