The box sat on the porch, tied with a ribbon. Inside, a collection of mixed wildflowers. He took the delivery, then wandered through the house, unable to find a place to set them. No card.

The walls seemed to be closing in on him. Every tick of the clock echoed in his ears. He should have called his sister, he reminded himself again. He felt a constant thrum of anxiety.

He finally placed the flowers on the piano, the vibrant colours a stark contrast to the quiet of the house. He walked over to the window, and stared at the empty street.
