The relentless clatter had begun to fray her nerves. The first day had been manageable, the second, a minor inconvenience, but now, on the third, Clara found herself unable to concentrate on anything. She retreated to the spare bedroom, pulling the blanket over her head, though the sound penetrated the layers.

Every time she heard a loud bang, she would jump. Her breath hitched. She felt claustrophobic in her own home. She imagined the noise would never stop.
