The news arrived just as he was about to leave for his shift at the diner. He felt a sudden, heavy weight settle in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. He leaned against the counter, his knees suddenly weak. The clatter of plates, the sizzle of the grill, the chatter of customers – all faded into a distant hum.

His hands, usually steady and efficient, fumbled as he attempted to tie his apron. He kept retying it, the knot never quite right. His reflection in the coffee machine's polished surface showed a face pale and drawn.

"Everything alright, Leo?" The manager's voice, usually a welcome reassurance, now grated. Leo mumbled a weak, "Yeah, fine," and forced a smile that felt brittle and unnatural.
