Gemotions

The familiar squeak of the front door, the click of the latch – it was a song she hadn’t heard in years. Now, it was a discordant note, grating on her nerves. She walked into the living room, a landscape of floral wallpaper and crocheted doilies, her mother perched on the couch, knitting needles clicking rhythmically.

"Oh, honey, you look exhausted," her mother said, her voice laced with concern. That concern, so often laced with subtle disapproval, made her skin prickle. She managed a weak smile, but the space felt constrained, the air thick with unspoken expectations. She couldn’t shake the feeling of being a small child again, under constant scrutiny, judged for every misstep.
