He stared at the hockey coach, his jaw clenched. "We need you in the net, Davis." He'd been a winger his whole life, all speed and attack. A goalie? It was a different universe. He felt a sudden, unwelcome chill spread through him.

He looked at the goalie's equipment: the mask, the pads, the massive gloves. It seemed like armor, a shield against the onslaught. A shield he’d never worn before. The ice felt unusually cold against his skates.

The other players were already skating, the puck zipping around the rink. He felt a growing sense of isolation, standing there, an outsider.
