The email arrived at precisely 9:00 AM. Clara stared at the subject line, her heart rate spiking. It was from the law firm. She felt this dizzying lightness, an almost disorienting quality. She slowly opened the email, her breath catching in her throat.

She knew, logically, that this job was important. Not only to her financial health, but to her sense of self-worth and future plans. But the thought of finding herself in the same building, in the same office, with Leo, her friend from law school, filled her with some kind of… discomfort.

She read the first sentence, then the second. She couldn't focus. Her hands were shaking so badly that she had to put the phone down to even see. She went to the window, and could see her reflection. She looked pale.
