The music seemed to amplify the silence in her head. Her pulse quickened the moment she saw him. Every joyful face around her blurred, and the party seemed to be taking place in slow motion.

She felt a sudden urge to turn and flee. She gripped her clutch tightly, her knuckles white. She looked around, searching for a familiar face, a safe haven.

Her smile felt frozen. She took a deep breath, and tried to act like nothing was out of the ordinary. She forced herself to speak to the person next to her, her voice sounding strained, brittle. She didn't want him to see her like this.
