The phone vibrated on the bedside table. Liam, his back to her, shifted slightly, reaching out without turning around. Amelia watched him, a knot forming in her stomach. He always answered these calls with a hushed tone, retreating to the balcony, the door shutting between them.

She found herself getting up, following him, her bare feet silent on the wooden floor. She paused, the glass door a barrier. The city lights twinkled in the distance, but all she could focus on was his silhouette, the way his shoulders were slumped. Something felt disjointed, out of place.

He ended the call and returned inside, closing the door behind him. “Just work,” he mumbled, but his eyes wouldn't meet hers. She felt an unsettling emptiness take root.
