“I’m just going to the shop,” David said, his voice unusually loud in the quiet apartment. He avoided her gaze as he grabbed his keys. She watched him, a strange feeling prickling at the back of her neck.

He usually left his phone on the counter. Tonight, he pocketed it. She told herself it was nothing. But as she watched him walk out, a sense of disquiet settled over her. The silence of the apartment was suffocating. She felt restless, her hands fidgeting.

She found herself walking towards the window, her breath catching in her throat. The street outside suddenly seemed menacing.
