The restaurant buzzed with a thousand conversations, but all Maya could hear was the low cadence of Kevin's voice across the table. He was on the phone again, a constant fixture now, excusing himself to take calls. She found her appetite vanishing. She picked at her food, the flavors suddenly bland and uninteresting.

He returned, smiling, but it felt hollow. “Sorry about that, babe,” he said, but his eyes darted around the room, avoiding hers. She felt a growing sense of detachment, as if she were watching a play, unable to intervene.

She pushed her plate away and took a sip of water. It felt strange to be sitting here with him.
