The shared computer screen reflected a pale light onto Daniel's face. He was working, or at least pretending to. A phone call interrupted their evening, and he quickly turned away, his voice becoming a secretive whisper. It was the same caller, again. This had become a daily routine. A coldness spread through Maria.

She pretended to read, but her attention was scattered, her mind racing. The familiarity of their routine felt tainted. She watched him from the corner of her eye. The light reflecting off the monitor made him look like a stranger.

A knot formed in her stomach. She felt as though she no longer knew him.
