The familiar scent of lavender from the garden was supposed to be soothing, but not today. Amelia sat stiffly on the garden bench, a knot of unease twisting in her gut. "That evening was terrible," she said quietly.

Across from her, Finn smiled. "No, it was a beautiful night. The moon was so bright, remember?" He seemed to be enjoying himself. His joy felt like a taunt.

Amelia’s mind felt clouded. She remembered the night, but it was nothing like his telling. She remembered the fight, the tears, the cold silence. His story seemed impossible.

The birdsong seemed to warp and distort. The world around her felt out of focus. She stared at her hands, unable to meet Finn's eyes. It was like he was looking into someone else’s eyes.

She felt the urgent need to leave. "I don’t remember it like that."
