Heads whipped around as the coach announced the team, but all Daniel could see was the blank space where his name should have been. The silence that followed the coach’s words was deafening. He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. He’d poured his heart and soul into this, sacrificing everything. A strange buzzing filled his ears, and the floor tilted beneath his feet. He felt a phantom pain in his knee, a reminder of the injury he’d fought so hard to overcome. He wanted to scream.
