He stared at the blank screen, the cancellation email still open. It was a gaping void where joy had been. His hands trembled as he slowly closed the laptop, the screen going dark. The silence of the apartment was suffocating. He went to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, the liquid sloshing over the rim of the glass and onto the counter, he didn't even notice. He found himself picking at the skin around his fingernails, a habit he'd long abandoned. Every corner of the apartment felt unfamiliar, alien.
