The phone slipped from his grasp, clattering to the hard wood floor. It was as if the ground had opened up beneath him. He didn’t bother to pick it up, he just kept staring at the cancelled email on the screen of the tablet. The carefully planned playlist, the festive decorations, the perfectly chosen cake – all now held no significance. A restless feeling built in his chest, urging him to do something, anything, but he didn't have the energy to move. He felt a deep sense of wrongness.
