Gemotions

The card’s bright yellow envelope seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy. Jessica, usually so practical, found herself inexplicably hesitant to open it. Her birthday had been last year. Or maybe the year before. She couldn't quite remember.

She carried the card with her as she moved, as if it were a fragile talisman. She opened it, her fingers clumsy and fumbling. Inside, it was completely blank. She spun around, convinced she was being watched.

She went to the window to look out, but there was nothing of interest. She closed the blinds. She felt completely alone.
