“Class of ’99… Can you believe it?” Sarah said, reading the subject line of the email aloud. Her voice cracked slightly. She'd been looking forward to this, at least she thought she had. Now, staring at the screen, a strange hollowness settled in the pit of her stomach.

She clicked on the email, her fingers fumbling over the mouse. The words blurred, the names of the organizing committee swimming before her eyes. The idea of seeing everyone, of being judged, of having to explain… everything… made her feel oddly breathless.

She felt a sudden urge to clean, a primal need to scrub and polish and erase. She went to the kitchen and stared at the dirty dishes, then turned and went back to her computer, shutting it down. She’d address it later. Much later.
