He stared at the computer screen, the bright light reflecting in his wide eyes. The genealogy website was now a monster. The faces in the family tree, once a simple collection of names, were now a complex web of unknowns. The information was a barrage. He felt as if he had been pushed off a cliff.

He slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. The mundane routine of the day felt impossible. He rose from the chair and began to pace.
