The sun was already dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows across the room. He found the package on the counter when he came home from work. The name on the label was “Elias Thorne.” He didn’t know who that was.

He paced the room, unable to sit still. His heart pounded against his ribs. The silence in the apartment seemed to hum with an unseen energy. He walked to the window and looked out into the street. It was too quiet.

He picked up the package, his hands clammy. He should just throw it away, but his feet felt rooted to the floor. He ran a hand through his hair. Something inside him urged him to open it.
