“Are you sure you want to be here?” His brother's concerned voice broke through the fog in Daniel's brain. He simply shrugged, unable to articulate the turmoil that churned within him.

He watched the bulldozer tear at the foundation, ripping away at the earth like some monstrous beast. The air crackled with the stench of dust and broken wood. He felt a phantom pain in his chest, a dull ache where his heart used to reside.

The house seemed to shrink and crumble with every violent blow. He couldn't shake the sensation that something fundamental was being stolen from him, piece by agonizing piece. He swallowed hard, trying to quell the rising tide of emotions.
