The email. The terse, official email. *Your patent application has been rejected.* His hands shook as he scrolled through the rejection reasons. They were logical, factual, but felt like a punch to the gut.

He went to the window, pulling the curtains back with a jerky movement. The city, usually vibrant and alive, now seemed cold and sterile. The buildings, the people, all felt distant, as if viewed through a frosted pane of glass.

He ran a hand over his face, scrubbing at his eyes. His jaw clenched. He felt a raw, burning sensation in his chest, a frustration he didn’t know how to contain.
