John sat frozen, his hands still hovering over the keyboard. He looked at the email. The scholarship wasn't his. The carefully crafted plans, the future he envisioned, crumbling.

He forced a deep breath, but it didn't help. He stood, pacing the small apartment. The walls seemed to close in, the air thick and heavy. He couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, of being exposed.

He went to the window, but the view offered no solace. The city lights seemed distant and cold. He felt a deep sense of unease, a prickly sensation that ran from the base of his neck to the tips of his fingers.
