The scent of lavender, usually a comfort, felt cloying in the air. David kept glancing at the empty birdcage, a recent Christmas gift that had yet to be used. Emily, across the sofa, was excitedly showing him photos of various parakeets. His stomach churned. He could barely handle himself, and now she wanted a creature that needed her care.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. He stood abruptly, knocking over a coffee table book, scattering the pages across the floor. "I... I need some air," he blurted, his voice tight.
