The hospital waiting room was sterile and silent. He found her, Jessica, sitting by a window. He went to her. He had to know.

"Jessica?" He didn't recognize his own voice.

She looked up, a vague politeness on her face. "Yes?"

"It's… Tom. Tom Williams. We used to…” he hesitated, the words feeling inadequate, “…go to the summer camp together. We were inseparable." A sudden tightness constricted his chest.

Jessica shook her head. "I don't think so." She turned back to the window, her gaze distant.

Tom felt a chill spreading through him. The room seemed to shrink, the air growing thin. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed, a high-pitched, irritating sound.
