"I just... I don't get it." Robert repeated the phrase, over and over, into the emptiness of his study. He felt a strange disconnect, as if he were observing himself from a distance. The rejection email was open on his monitor, the words a constant, stinging reminder.

He walked to his bookshelf. He started at the beginning, staring at each book. The books seemed to mock him, as though they were successful, and he was not. He pulled a book out at random and hurled it at the wall.

He went to the window and stared at the park across the street. A sudden burst of anger surged through him. He felt hot. He punched the window.
