Eliza meticulously examined the photos. A distant cousin of hers was digging through some things in the old house when she stumbled upon them. Her father, a respected doctor, always spoke of his mother’s quiet, self-sacrificing nature. The photos told a different story. In one, he was with a woman who looked nothing like his mother, and was clearly enjoying a moment. Eliza's throat closed.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching a play, a story that had nothing to do with her. A buzzing sensation ran over her skin. The more she looked, the less she understood the people she thought she knew.
