The band’s music faded, and a hush fell over the room as David’s name was announced. His mouth went dry. He felt a tremor in his leg. He had a speech written, but he couldn't remember it. He’d barely looked at it.

He adjusted his tie, his fingers fumbling with the knot. He could hear his own pulse hammering in his ears. The room was spinning. He thought he might pass out.

He walked to the podium, his legs heavy. He stared at the microphone, the black void staring back at him. He could do this, he told himself. He had to. But the words wouldn't come.
